The first three numbers represent the area the number was applied for in. Later, it reprepresented the zip code location of the applicant. So, generally, you would have alot of people of the same prefix/nickname in the same locale. Calling everyone by full SSN's would be too much to remember, especially as time goes on and we are each assigned more and more numbers to rember for ourselves alone.

The Area Number is assigned by the geographical region. Prior to 1975, cards were issued in local Social Security offices around the country and the Area Number represented the office code in which the card was issued. This did not necessarily have to be in the area where the applicant lived, since a person could apply for their card in any Social Security office. Since 1972, when SSA began assigning SSNs and issuing cards centrally from Baltimore, the area number assigned has been based on the ZIP code in the mailing address provided on the application for the original Social Security card. The applicant's mailing address does not have to be the same as their place of residence. Why use numbers? Well, people have the right to name their child anyway they want. And it's not good for people's names to be their SS Number cause they will get their identity robbed.
