What numbers are considered low blood pressure?

I went to the doctor after fainting a couple of weeks ago, and the doctor had my blood pressure checked. I had a blood pressure of 80 over 60. He didn't say much about it, so I figured I'm fine. But I was talking to one of my friends, and she said that she had a higher blood pressure than I did, and her doctor told her that she has low blood pressure.

So do I have low blood pressure? I need to know what number is considered low blood pressure.

Some more information that may affect the answer:

I am 14 1/2 years old

I weigh around 135 lbs (she probably weighs a little less)

I am male

I am appx. anywhere from 5'6'' to 5'10'' (my friend is the same height)What numbers are considered low blood pressure?
90/60 is considered Low. If it is consitently running that low, then it could be a problem. However, just happening once, it is probably nothing to worry about and is why the Dr. wasn't too concerned. You can check it at home with an auto cuff from the drug store if you are worried, and let the Dr. know if it stays low.

However, if you faint again and it is low and your Dr. still does not seem worried.. GET A SECOND opinion. It could be a sign of something more serious. What numbers are considered low blood pressure?
In adults, the systolic pressure should be less than 120 mmHg, and the diastolic pressure should be less than 80 mmHg

Hypotension (blood pressure below normal): may be indicated by a systolic pressure lower than 90, or a pressure 25 mmHg lower than usual
Arteries carry blood from the heart to all parts of the body. Blood pressure is the force that pushed along the arteries every time the heart beats. So, blood pressure is a measure of how hard the heart has to work to pump blood.

This process is known as systolic pressure.

The process where the heart is at rest, between beats and the blood pressure falls is known as diastolic pressure. Blood pressure is measured using a blood pressure cuff and recorded as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure. The top number indicates the systolic pressure and the bottom indicates the diastolic pressure. Normal blood pressure must be lower than 120/80.

Blood pressure varies during the course of a day. It is lowest when the person is resting and gradually rises as the person gets up. Blood pressure usually rises when the person is tense, agitated, or generally energetic, even though it stays pretty much the same. Blood pressure in children is comparatively much lower than in the adults since pressure rises as a person ages.

The systolic and diastolic reading of 140/90 or higher indicates high blood pressure. This usually results in faster heartbeat as the heart tries to pump blood faster, and this might result in a stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems due to the pressure on the arteries.

Severe medical problems also cause blood pressure to rise. Also, arteries become hardened and narrowed with cholesterol plaque and calcium, resulting in the heart having to pump harder to make blood pass through these arteries. When the heart pumps harder, blood pressure tends to automatically increase.

High blood pressure is linked to hypertension, which leads to heart attack. With a reading higher than 180/110 the patient required immediate medical attention since the risk of heart attack is greatest.

Individuals having a steady low blood pressure tend to weigh less and be short in stature compared to those with a normal reading. These individuals don鈥檛 necessarily suffer from weakness or fatigue.Often, chronic fatigue sufferers are misdiagnosed with low blood pressure, as symptoms are the same.

Some instances of low blood pressure may be observed during the day as pressure fluctuates according to activity. These low systolic and diastolic readings cannot be considered as low blood pressure. It is only when there is a steady low reading for a specific period of time that the individual may be diagnosed with low blood pressure.

Hope this information helps.
A normal blood pressure is 110/70

Yes, your blood pressure is low. That's better that being too high like mine. But, I'd go to a different doctor and get a second opinion. I remember fainting at your age too in the bathroom and the doctor said it was common. I didn't think so at the time and maybe still don't.

That's low!

=)
Average blood pressure is 120 over 70. Your blood pressure is low, but not dangerously so. Your age and size have a bit to do with it, so you have nothing to worry about, it's normal. I myself have always had low blood pressure in spite of my lifestyle (smoking, stress, etc), and I've never had any trouble.
Normal: Less than 120/80

Hypotension (Low blood pressure )

Low blood pressure is rarely a problem and in most cases it is beneficial. Studies show that the lower your blood pressure, the lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Low blood pressure is an abnormal condition where a person's blood pressure (pressure of the blood against the walls of the blood vessels during and after each beat of the heart) is much lower than usual, which can cause symptoms such as dizziness or lightheadedness.

When the blood pressure is too low, there is inadequate blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs.

The term ';hypotension'; is usually used only when blood pressure has fallen so far that enough blood can no longer reach the brain, causing dizziness and fainting.

Blood pressure is a measure of the pressure in the arteries created by the heart contracting. During the day, a normal person's blood pressure changes constantly, depending on activity. Low blood pressure can be diagnosed by taking the blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer.

Blood pressure is recorded as systolic (higher) and diastolic (lower) pressures. A healthy young adult has a blood pressure of about 110/75, which typically rises with age to about 140/90 by age 60 (a reading now considered mildly elevated).

In some cases where the ability of the nerves to conduct signals are impaired by various diseases low blood pressure can result from a malfunction.

Low blood pressure is commonly caused by drugs such as the following

Medications used for surgery

Anti-anxiety agents

Treatment for high blood pressure

Diuretics

Heart medicines

Some antidepressants

Narcotic analgesics

Alcohol

Other causes of low blood pressure include the following:

Dehydration

Heart failure

Heart attack

Changes in heart rhythm

Anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic response)

Shock (from severe infection, stroke, anaphylaxis, major trauma, or heart attack)

Advanced diabetes

In many instances, low blood pressure isn't serious. Even occasional dizziness or lightheadedness may be relatively minor 鈥?the result of mild dehydration, low blood sugar or too much time in the sun or a hot tub, for example. In these situations, it's not a matter so much of how far, but of how quickly, your blood pressure drops. Still, it's important to see your doctor if you experience any signs or symptoms of hypotension because they sometimes can point to more serious problems. It can be helpful to keep a record of your symptoms, when they occur and what you were doing at the time.

Even moderate postural, postprandial or neurally mediated hypotension can seriously affect quality of life, leading not only to dizziness and weakness but also to fainting and a risk of injury from falls. And severely low blood pressure from any cause can deprive your body of enough oxygen to carry out its normal functions, leading to damage to your heart and brain.

Call the doctor, Ask HIM! And ask why he thinks you Fainted!
yes u do have low blood pressure

which is good but when it is that low i don't know if your friend has told u or not or your doctor for that matter

when u feel like your going to faint

if possible sit down, or even better still lie down with your legs elevated until u start to feel better

and that feeling will pass i suffer from high blood pressure

which i am on medication for and have been since i was pregnant with my last child

but that happened to me when i first started my medication

my blood pressure went on the lower side for a little while

and that's what the doctor told me to do if i felt like i was going to faint

low blood pressure starts at 110 over 70

and height and weight does not come into it,does any one else in your family have low blood pressure because their is normally a family history

but if your doctor is not worried i wouldn't be worried either
Blood pressure can vary over a wide range. For instance, the top pressure when the heart contracts (systolic) can vary from 90 to 240 mmHg and the bottom pressure when the heart relaxes (diastolic) can vary from 40 to 160 mmHg. About a hundred years ago it was first recognised that high blood pressure was a major cause of strokes and heart attacks. At this time, it was thought that low blood pressure was a major cause of depression and tiredness. Many people were quite wrongly treated for low blood pressure in the UK in the early 1900s. However, there is no evidence that low blood pressure causes either of these symptoms.

It is only in a tiny minority of people with low blood pressure, ie, readings below

90/60 mmHg, where there is an underlying cause and treatment may be needed. Most people with low blood pressure are extremely lucky because on average they are going to live longer and need to take out a good pension policy! This page on low blood pressure is designed to reassure those with low blood pressure and at the same time ensure that, in those rare situations where there is an underlying cause, you seek appropriate medical advice.
Anytime the bottom number is below 70 is usually low. I am about 120/70 which is good for my age. since you are 14 maybe its good for your age. dunno..
IT USED TO BE 120 OVER 80. IT'S NOW 110 OVER 70, I BELIEVE.
it depends on the circumstances, fainting lowers your blood pressure so there was a reason for it to be low. your friend may have low blood pressure for another reason.
